미국에서 자동차 구입하기

대중교통이 매우 발달된 한국과 달리 미국에서는 뉴욕을 제외하면 일상생활에서 대중교통을 이용하기가 쉽지 않아서 대부분의 미국인들은 자가용을 이용해요. 저렴한 기름값 때문에 부담 없이 자동차를 운행할 수 있기 때문이기도 하죠 (현재 미국의 기름값은 지역에 따라 다르지만 리터당 600원에서 700원 정도 에요).  

 

자동차를 구매하시려면 크게 딜러십 (Dealership)을 이용하거나, 중고차 판매 회사를 이용하거나, 인터넷을 이용한 개인 간의 직접 거래를 통해서 구매하실 수 있어요. 연간 1,700만 대 규모의 자동차 시장인 미국에는 지엠 (GM), 포드 (Ford)의 미국 브랜드뿐만 아니고 벤츠 (Mercedes Benz), 비엠더블유 (BMW), 폭스바겐 (Volkswagen) 등의 독일차와 도요타 (Toyota), 혼다 (Honda), 닛산 (Nissan) 등의 일본차, 람보르기니 (Lamborghini), 피아트 (Fiat), 벤틀리 (Bentley) 등 유럽차들의 딜러들을 어렵지 않게 찾아 볼 수 있어요. 이들 딜러십들은 자기 브랜드의 새차뿐만 아니라 자신들이 성능을 보증하는 중고차 (Certified Pre-Owned Car), 일반 중고차 (Pre-Owned Car), 그리고 다른 브랜드의 중고차 등을 판매해요. 딜러십에서 새 차를 사실 경우에는 시간을 충분히 두고 여러 군데에서 견적을 받으시면서 흥정하시면 생각보다 판매가보다 많이 싼 가격에 사실 수 있어요. 중고차들은 보통 물건이 많지 않아서 새 차에 비해 흥정이 잘 안되는 편이에요. 

 

미국에는 중고차 시장이 매우 잘 발달되어 있어서 여러가지 옵션이 있어요. 딜러십에서 성능이 보증된 중고차는 약간 비싸기는 하지만 별다른 문제없이 상당기간 타실 수 있어요. 공장 보증 이후 추가 보증도 구매할 수도 있어요. 물론 당일 바로 구매할 수 있다는 장점도 있고요. 차에 대해 잘 아신 다면 성능이 보증되지 않는 중고차도 고려해 보실 수 있는데 보통 초기에 수리 비용이 조금 들어가고 자동차 성능이 복불복에 가까운 경우가 종종 있어요. 카맥스(CARMAX)와 같이 중고차만 취급하는 회사도 있어요. 카맥스에서 차를 사실 경우에는 이 회사에서 자동차의 성능을 보장하고 여러 가지 애프터서비스를 받을 수는 있지만 판매하는 자동차의 성능이나 연식에 비해 가격이 약간 비싸다는 의견이 있어요 (이 회사는 중고차를 사기도 하는데 딜러십보다 더 쳐줄 수도 있으니 나중에 자동차를 파실 때 카맥스에서 제공하는 무료 견적은 꼭 받아 보세요). 크레이그리스트 (Craigslist) 등 인터넷을 통한 개인 간의 거래로 차를 사는 경우도 있는데 가격이 저렴하다는 장점이 있지만 타이틀이전이나 기타 비용처리 등의 문제를 손수 해결하셔야 한다는 점이 불편하고 차에 대해 잘 모르실 경우 품질에 문제가 있는 차를 구매하게 되실 수도 있어요.

A used car with guaranteed performance at a dealer shop is a little expensive, but you can ride for a while without any problems. You can also purchase additional warranty after factory warranty on the same day that you buy the car. If you are familiar with cars, you might consider a used car that does not guarantee performance, which usually comes at a small repair cost in the early stages. Some companies like CARMAX only handle used cars. In the case of a car in CARMAX, the company can guarantee the performance of the car and get various after-sales services, but the price is slightly higher than the performance (However, this is a good place to stop by when you sell your car since they provide a free quote service). There are some cases where you buy a car through an internet transaction (Craigslist). The price is low, but it is inconvenient for you to solve the problems regarding the title or other expenses and also you may buy a car having problems.
