미국에서 시장보기

미국은 여러 나라 사람들이 모여 사는 만큼 식료품도 다양하고 식료품점 (Grocery Market)의 종류도 다양해요. 우선 전국구 미국 식료품점으로는 월마트 (Walmart), 타깃 (Target), 코스트코 (Costco) 등이 있는데 이들 식료품점은 잡화점에 더 가까워서 일상에 필요한 대부분의 품목들 (자전거, 티브이, 가구 등)을 함께 취급해요. 창고형 식료품점인 코스트코 (Costco)는 한국에 진출에 있기도 하죠. 이외에도 지역별로 다른 브랜드의 식료품점이 있는데 캘리포니아에는 앨버슨 (Albertsons)이 텍사스에는 에이치이비 (H.E.B)와 크로거 (Kroger)가 가장 흔해요. 홀푸드 (Whole Foods)에서는 가격은 약간 비싸지만 유기농 식료품 위주로 장을 보실 수 있어요. 

 

어느 정도 큰 규모의 외국인 인구가 모인 도시에서는 그 나라의 물건을 위주로 판매하는 식료품점이 생기게 되는데, 한국 식료품점인 한아름 마트 (H Mart)와 중국 식료품점인 나인티 나인 랜치 (99 Ranch)는 미국의 대부분의 대도시에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있어요. 모든 식료품점의 시스템은 한국의 이마트와 동일해서 필요한 물건을 카트에 담으신 후 계산대에 가져가시고, 점원이 가격을 알려주면 카드나 현금으로 금액을 지불하시면 됩니다. 요즘은 애플 페이나 삼성 페이도 많이 이용해요.  

 

미국에는 지역마다 다르지만 우리나라의 재래시장과 유사한 농부시장 (Farmers' Market)이 주말마다 서는 곳도 있어요. 이곳에서는 생산자와 소비자를 직접연결해 주기 때문에 신선한 먹거리를 약간은 저렴한 가격으로 구입하실 수 있어요. 다만 거래가 주로 현금으로 이루어 지니까 현금을 준비하셔야 해요.

 

In the United States, there are a variety of grocery stores. First of all, there are nationwide general grocery stores such as Walmart, Kroger, Target and Costco. They sell most of the necessities (bicycle, etc.). Costco, a warehouse grocery store, is also in Korea. There are also other local grocery stores such as Albertson's, which is most common in California and H-E-B in Texas. It's a little bit expensive at Whole Foods, but you can buy organic food.

 

In a city with a large population of foreigners, there is a grocery store that sells goods of a specific country. Korean grocery store, H-Mart and Chinese grocery store, 99 Ranch are easy to find in most major cities. All grocery stores have the same system as E-Mart in Korea, so you can put the necessary items in your cart and take them to the checkout counter, and pay for them by credit card or cash. These days, people also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

 

In some places, farmers' Market, similar to traditional Korean markets, is held every weekend. It connects producers and consumers directly, so you can buy fresh food at a slightly cheaper price. But you need to prepare cash because the deal is usually made in cash.
