휴스턴 소개

휴스턴은 뉴욕, 엘에이, 시카고에 이은 인구 약 230만 (미국 인구 조사국, United States Census Bureau, 2016년 7월 인구 추정치)의 미국 제4의 도시로, 1969년 7월 인간이 달에 처음 착륙했을 때 지구 밖에서 인류의 언어로 처음 불렸던 도시로 유명하기도 해요. 휴스턴 대도시권 (Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area)은 슈거랜드 (Sugar Land), 케이티 (Katy), 페어랜드 (Pearland), 우드랜드 (The Woodlands) 등의 교외 지역을 포함하고 약 680만 인구 (2016년 추정치)가 거주하고 있어요. 휴스턴 대도시권은 2050년 경에는 시카고를 추월한다고 할 정도로 최근 인구 유입이 활발한 곳이기도 해요. 또한 미국 내에서 뉴욕 다음으로 인종이 다양해서 세계 각국의 사람들을 만나 볼 수 있답니다. 휴스턴에서는 무려 145개의 다른 언어가 사용된다고 하네요. 대략적인 인구 구성은 백인이 약 40%, 히스패닉이 약 36%, 흑인이 약 17%, 그리고 아시아인이 약 7%이고 한인 교포는 약 33,000여 명이 거주하고 있어요 (대한민국 외교부 통계).  

 

타임지에서 "왜 텍사스가 미국의 미래인가?"라는 제목으로 집중 조명했을 정도로 텍사스에서는 전통 및 최신 기술 산업이 급속도로 발전하고 있고 그 중심에는 휴스턴이 있어요.  휴스턴은 텍사스 (Texas) 주에서 가장 큰 도시로 나사 (NASA)를 중심으로 한 항공 우주산업의 중심지이며, 엑손모빌 (ExxonMobil)을 비롯한 수많은 다국적 석유기업들이 모여있는 세계 에너지 수도예요. 또한 엠디앤더슨 암센터 (M.D. Anderson Cancer Center)를 중심으로 한 세계에서 가장 큰 텍사스 메디컬 센터 (Texas Medical Center)가 있는 세계 의료연구의 중심지이기도 해요. 텍사스 메디컬 센터에는 약 106,000명이 근무하고 있어요. 또한, SK 건설 (SK E&C), 삼성엔지니어링 (Samsung Engineering), 대우 인터내셔널 (Daewoo International) 등의 40여 개의 한국 기업들도 진출해 있어요.

휴스턴의 관광산업 또한 휴스턴 산업에서 중요한 비중을 차지하는데, 휴스턴 관광산업 관련 종사자 수는 24만 명에 이르고, 관광업이 창출하는 경제 규모가 23조 이상이라고 하네요 (2016년 기준). 이는 텍사스 주에서 가장 높은 수치라고 하네요. 매년 약 240만 명의 외국인 관광객이 방문할 만큼 휴스턴에는 휴스턴 국제영화제 등을 포함한 문화 예술 공연, 휴스턴 미술 박물관, 휴스턴 자연사 박물관 등 20여 개가 넘는 박물관, 농구, 야구 등을 포함한 다양한 스포츠와 휴스턴 동물원, 텍사스에서 제일 큰 쇼핑센터인 갤러리아가 있어요. 그리스, 폴란드, 일본, 한국, 중국 축제 등을 포함한 세계 각국의 축제 등을 즐길 수 있는 곳이 휴스턴이기도 하답니다. 또한, 휴스턴은 워싱턴 포스트에 의해 '전미에서 다양한 음식이 공존하는 도시 톱 5'로 선정되었을 만큼 세계 여러 나라의 음식을 즐길 수 있는 도시예요..

It is also famous for being the first city in the world spoken by human language when human first landed on the moon. The Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area includes suburban areas such as Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland, and The Woodlands, and about 6.8 million people (estimated 2016) are living in the area. The Houston metropolitan area is a place where the population is recently growing rapidly. It is also the second diverse city in the United States followed by New York. ​​In Houston, more than 145 different languages are spoken. The approximate population is about 40% white, about 36% Hispanic, about 17% black, about 7% Asian (including about 33,000 Koreans).

 

Time magazine focused on "why is Texas the future of the United States?" In Texas, traditional and state-of-the-art technology is rapidly developing and at the heart of it is Houston. Houston is the largest city in Texas and is the hub of the aerospace industry, centering on NASA, and the world energy capital with multinational oil companies, including ExxonMobil. It is also the center of world medical research with the largest Texas Medical Center in the world centered around the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. There are about 106,000 people at the Texas Medical Center. There are more than 40 Korean companies, including SK E&C, Samsung Engineering, and Daewoo International.

 

Houston's tourism industry is also an important part of the Houston industry. The Houston tourism industry employs 240,000 people and the tourism industry generates more than 23 billion dollars (by 2016). This is the highest figure in Texas. Houston is home to more than 20 museums, including the Houston International Film Festival, the Houston Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Natural History, the Houston Zoo, the Houston Zoo, and more than 20 museums, and Galleria which is one of the largest shopping centers in the U.S. Houston is also a place where you can enjoy festivals around the world including Greece, Poland, Japan, Korea, and Chinese festivals. Houston is also the city where you can enjoy food from all over the world as it was selected by Washington Post as "Top 5 cities where various foods coexist in the U.S.".
